What Advice Would You Give to a Consumer Looking to Hire a Service Provider in Your Line of Work?
In the state of California, there is no licensing authority for the home inspection industry. Many amateur home inspectors operate without insurance and sufficient experience/training. It is often difficult for a consumer to differentiate a professional from an amateur. At a minimum, a consumer should look for a home inspector who is certified by a major industry association and carries E&O/General liability insurance. I also strongly recommend considering the background of your prospective home inspector. Choosing an inspector with a construction/maintenance or engineering background is a smart choice as they typically have a much deeper understanding of your home's systems and components.
